A few simple questions to help us serve you
David Perry, Executive editor -- Furniture Today, January 20, 2002
One of the best parts of my new stint on the bedding beat is the chance to learn from some very nice people and some very good marketers. Yes, those are qualities that are shared by a great many people in the bedding industry.
It's always stimulating to talk about the large and small issues that fill our days in the mattress business. Every now and then, someone asks me how I can write a column about bedding every single week. My answer: The more specialized the subject, the more there is to talk about.
Bedding is a complex, multi-faceted subject. Suppliers, manufacturers, sleep researchers, marketers, advertising specialists, sales representatives and retailers are all part of the bedding universe. Each subgroup has its own insights and issues.
To help me better understand all of those issues, I am asking you to take just a couple of minutes and share your thoughts with me.
As I've begun making the rounds, I'm asking manufacturers and retailers to give me their thoughts on key issues facing the industry. I've been told that manufacturers and retailers can have very different views of those issues. I haven't yet heard from enough of you to form my own conclusions on that score. And I want to see what unique perspectives other industry players have on the issues.
That's where you can help. I would like to get your thoughts on:
-
What are the key issues facing the industry?
-
If you could change one thing in the bedding industry, what would it be?
-
What's the best thing about the bedding industry?
-
What's the worst thing about the bedding industry?
-
What topics do you think I should write about?
If you don't mind, please tell me a little about yourself. Are you a producer, manufacturer, supplier, sales rep, etc.? This will give me an idea of your perspective.
Even though my smiling face stands at the top of this column, I really believe this column belongs to you. Over the years, you've been generous with your insights on bedding. I love the process of taking those insights out into the marketplace of ideas and testing them, and then letting you know what I've found out.
You can write me at Furniture/Today, P.O. Box 2754, High Point, N.C. 27261. Or you can e-mail me at dperry@cahners.com. Or you can call me directly at (336) 605-1114.
You don't have to tell me your name, but it is nice to know who you are. I would love to learn more about what you do, and what I can do to help you do your job better.
I'll be sharing your responses to the above questions in future columns. Thanks for your help.
