Toronto market looks to be largest in 30 years
By Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, January 6, 2002
TORONTO — With some 84 first-time exhibitors, the 30th edition of the Toronto winter market will be the largest in history.
Now called The Canadian Home Furnishings Market, the show kicks off its four-day run at the Toronto International Center of Commerce on Saturday.
Organized by the Quebec Furniture Manufacturers Assn., the market will cover about 500,000 square feet of temporary exhibit place, plus the 65 or so permanent showrooms in Canada's Furniture Mart, attached to the TICC.
Also participating will be a number of outside permanent showrooms operated by La-Z-Boy Canada, Sklar-Peppler, Superstyle Furniture, Hamilton & Spill, Décor-Rest, Bedford/King Koil and T&J Furniture, among others.
"The Toronto show has been on a steady growth curve since 1998, as evidenced by the opening of Hall 6 in 1998 and Hall 5 in 2000," said Jean François Michaud, QFMA executive vice president. "The top names in the furniture industry from across the land will be with us. The quality and quantity of products on display and the expertise of our exhibitors have greatly enhanced the stature of the show over the years. Visitors have access to a huge range of products, styles and price points."
For the first time in years, the QFMA received C$100,000 in government funds to promote the show in the United States and organize a buying mission of U.S. retailers. Michaud hopes some 500 U.S. buyers will attend the show.
"We've had about four times the number of pre-registration requests from U.S. retailers than we received at this time last year," Michaud said.
Also on tap for the second straight year is the Trends Display. Created by Montreal designers André Caron and Pierre D'Anjou, the showcase features 18 vignettes of new product from Canadian manufacturers exhibiting at market. It will be unveiled at a reception on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. The display is housed in TICC's Hall 5.
The following evening, Furniture/Today will sponsor a cocktail party in celebration of the Toronto market's 30th anniversary. It will begin at 6 p.m. in the French Room, located in Hall 2.
The market will have its traditional kick-off, the Trillium Awards dinner. That event, organized by the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Assn., will be held at nearby Verdi's Banquet Hall on Friday, Jan. 11 beginning at 6 p.m.
