Charles White Jr., retired Thomasville design manager

THOMASVILLE, N.C. — Charles "C.L." White Jr., a designer and design manager for Thomasville Furniture Inds. for 46 years until his retirement in 1981, has died. He was 87.
White, a graduate of the Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids, Mich., studied under Leo Jiranek. At Thomasville, he designed bedroom and dining room furniture, supervised staff and freelance designers, and selected hardware, trim and decorative items.
He worked as a consultant to the company for several years after his retirement, and was named to the American Society of Furniture Designers Hall of Fame in 1985.
White was instrumental in the creation and building of the monumental Big Chair in the Thomasville town square.
Survivors include two sons, including Charles L. White III, a representative for manufacturers Webb, Stoneville and Carolina Furniture in north Texas; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
