Palliser: Big and bold
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 6, 2002
WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Palliser, as the largest of the Canadian leather producers distributing into the United States, has the ability to go off on some very different tangents because of its formidable size.
Palliser's fully rounded product line encompasses stationary, sleeper and motion upholstery entries, in addition to its original case goods line.
Founded in 1944 by President Art DeFehr's father A.A. DeFehr as a woodworking concern, it has grown to become Canada's largest manufacturer of assembled household furniture and the 13th largest in North America.
Palliser today employs 5,000 workers at manufacturing facilities in Calgary, Alberta; Troutman, N.C.; Saltillo, Mexico; Indonesia and here, totaling 3 million square feet (including its case goods production).
With its size, capabilities and brand name, Palliser in 2001 entered into the retail franchise fray with two retail store concepts, Palliser Rooms and EQ3.
"Our established position in the marketplace and the brand recognition of the Palliser name here in Canada have provided a strong base for this initiative," DeFehr said.
The DeFehr Foundation, established in the 1970s, is Palliser's charitable organization, which supports activities to improve the quality of life locally and internationally.
Palliser annually donates a percentage of its corporate profits to worthy causes.
"Giving back to the local and international community is an important part of what we do," DeFehr said. "That's the greatest motivation to increase profits."
