Jaymar: European sophistication
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 6, 2002
TERREBONNE, Quebec — Jaymar is known as a European-style, hand-crafted resource for medium- to upper-priced leather and fabric upholstery in contemporary, traditional, transitional, sleeper, motion and recliner styles.
The 45-year-old company was founded by George Reinitz, an Auschwitz survivor who named the firm in memory of his lost parents, Jacob and Marta.
Following Reinitz's retirement two years ago, Guy Patenaude, president, took the helm.
More than 300 workers are employed at the company's 150,000-square-foot plant in this Montreal suburb. The leather producer has expanded in terms of technological innovation, with the addition of new cutting machines, cell manufacturing and improved efficiencies.
Gary Zuckerman, who is vice president of sales and marketing for the U.S. division, recalls the company entered the U.S. marketplace in 1980 because, as a New York City retailer, he bought the product line. Likewise, Jaymar introduced leather in 1983 because Zuckerman recalls selecting the leathers.
Nearly 50% of Jaymar's business is in Canada, with the bulk of those sales leather-driven.
In addition to value pricing, Zuckerman said Jaymar prides itself on cutting-edge contemporary design and a broad SKU assortment. Its leather line ranges from about $1,199 to $1,999 retail.
"We make high-end details very affordable," Zuckerman said, noting design and styling details come first.
