Legacy Leather: American standards
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 6, 2002
CONCORD, Ontario — Established in North Carolina 12 years ago, stationary leather producer Legacy Leather International relocated its production here six years ago to take advantage of available labor.
President Guy Baur said the company has outperformed expectations. "Everything is based on projections, not performance, but we have pulled in double digits just about every year. We expect to hit $30 million this year."
Unlike some Canadian manufacturers which are heavily skewed toward European tastes, Baur said Legacy's frames are built to American specs, utilizing eight-way hand-tied foundations, coil-spring cushioning and larger scaling.
Ninety percent of Legacy's business is in the United States, largely a custom-order business with two-week delivery to better independent retailers. A nominal container business is limited to Puerto Rico and Brazil.
In October, Legacy debuted Collezione Divani, an architecturally inspired contemporary spinoff of premiere leather seating for select customers.
The new high-end offering, created by Giuliano Ianniciello, Legacy's designer and product manager, offers retails averaging $2,800 as compared to Legacy's typical $1,799 sofas.
To accommodate Collezione Divani, Legacy in July will add 40,000 square feet to its existing 100,000-square-foot facility. The expansion includes adding 50 employees to its current workforce of 180.
Legacy's leathers are largely sourced from Italy, Germany and Scandinavia. "We don't do a lot of seaming, and we need large hides for what we have to do." Bauer said. "We offer real value."
