Canadian leather stars shine in U.S.
By Joan Gunin -- Furniture Today, January 6, 2002
The leather business in Canada centers around several producers, most family owned, some in the hands of the second generation. All are active in the U.S. market.
Chief among the Canadian players are Coja, El Ran, Jaymar, Legacy, Palliser and Rodi.
These majors get an able assist from such companies as La-Z-Boy Canada, Décor-Rest and Distinctive Designs.
Their company histories are interesting and varied. George Reinitz of Jaymar, Angelo Marzilli of Décor-Rest and the Vlessings of Coja have European roots, while A.A. DeFehr, the founder of Palliser, came to Canada from Russia.
One common denominator of all these leather players is their keen interest in U.S. business and their dedication to building their visibility and brand names within the States.
Profiles of a sampling of these players — large and small — is presented on these pages.
