Kingsdown Canada's Dormo system wins Grand Trillium

By Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, January 14, 2002

Kingsdown Canada won the 2002 Grand Trillium Award for its Dormo Diagnostics system, the first time the top award went to a marketing concept.

It's only the second time a bedding company has won the Grand Trillium. Toronto-based Kingsdown Canada also won in 1998 for its Heather Glen collection.

Organized by the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Assn., the Trillium Awards recognize excellence in the design, construction and marketing of Canadian-made household furniture.

The awards were presented here last week at a gala dinner on the eve of The Canadian Home Furnishings Market.

In all, 46 Trilliums were presented to 16 furniture manufacturers from across the country. The winners were selected by a jury of retailers from a pool of some 136 entries.

Several changes were instituted this year. An outside accounting firm tabulated the jury's marks, the Merit Awards were dropped and the awards for Canadian design and Canadian content were merged.

The 2002 Trillium Summit Award for Canadian Design and Content went to West Bros. Furniture for its Rudyard Kipling dining room suite, which also won the Trillium for traditional dining room furniture.

The Hanover, Ontario-based case goods maker's Kipling collection also won in the entertainment centers and wall systems categories.

Brentwood Classics, a Toronto-based upholstery producer, won a record 10 Trillium Awards, eclipsing the previous mark set by another upholstery resource, Décor-Rest Furniture, which didn't enter the competition this year.

Brentwood swept up the awards in most of the fabric upholstery categories, including occasional chairs, upholstered suites and upholstered dual-purpose furniture.

Leather Living of Brampton, Ontario, was the other big winner, garnering six awards, including three in dual-purpose leather upholstery.

Superstyle Furniture of Toronto received three Trilliums, in the country/colonial and transitional upholstered dual-purpose furniture categories and in the accent furniture category.

The only first-time Trillium winner this year was Le Meuble Villageois of St-Benoit-Labre, Quebec, whose Cherry Classic collection won two awards, one in transitional dining and the other in multi-piece wall systems.

Other winners included:

  • Leather Craft of Toronto, which won in modern/contemporary and transitional leather occasional chairs, transitional dual-purpose leather upholstery, and in two stationary leather categories, country/colonial and modern /contemporary.

  • La-Z-Boy Canada, in both the chair and sofa motion furniture categories.

  • Bogdon & Gross of Walkerton, Ontario, in both wood occasional tables and country/contemporary bedroom.

  • Acme Chrome Furniture of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in laminate-top casual dining.

  • Reflections Furniture of Toronto, in glass-top casual dining.

  • Barzelle Designs of Toronto, in wood-top casual dining and modern/contemporary bedroom furniture.

  • Cuoio Designs of Toronto, in traditional stationary leather upholstery.

  • Toronto Art Lamp, in country/colonial portable lighting.

  • Engelite Lighting of Toronto, in three portable lighting categories — traditional, transitional and modern/contemporary.

  • Durham Furniture of Durham, Ontario, in transitional bedroom furniture.

Dormo Diagnostics, a computer-based system that assesses consumers' sleeping needs and recommends a particular mattress, won the 2002 Grand Trillium Award for Kingsdown Canada.
