Ashley's patriotism goes through (actually on) roof

COLTON, Calif. — Ashley Furniture is showing its patriotism in 11,250 square feet of red, white and blue on the roof of its new distribution center here.
The painted American flag, measuring 150 feet by 75 feet, covers only a small part of the 600,000-square-foot center's roof but is clearly visible to planes passing overhead.
The gesture earned coverage in the local press. "We thought it was a great idea, especially after what happened on Sept. 11," Benny Garcia, Ashley's warehouse manager, told a newspaper reporter.
Construction crews painted the flag, with red and white stripes nearly six feet wide, as they were completing the $30 million building this fall.
Ashley has a long tradition of expressing its patriotism, including the war memorial park in the company's hometown of Arcadia, Wis., featuring statues of soldiers by Ron Wanek, the company's chief executive officer.
