W. Morris, American of Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — H. Wayne Morris, director of government/university sales and marketing for contract furniture maker American of Martinsville, has died. He was 54.

Morris had been with American of Martinsville since 1998. He began his industry career at The Lane Co. in 1970. He left the company for other industry posts after a few years, and returned to Lane in 1989.

From 1989 to 1998, he held sales and marketing positions with the company and was involved in the implementation of the Lane Hospitality Division.

Morris is survived by his wife and two daughters.

A. Coplan, former head, Retail Stores Service

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Asher Coplan, former president of Retail Stores Service, died here Nov. 30. He was 87.

Following World War II, Coplan joined Retail Sales Service, which was founded by his father, Harry Coplan, in 1927.

In the 1950s, RSS was the first company to offer the full-color circular advertisement to the furniture industry.

Coplan was president of the company from 1952 until his retirement in 1978. RSS went out of business in 1994.

He is survived by his wife, one son and one grandson.
