Big retailers rack up December sales gains

FORT WORTH, Texas — Specialty retailers Pier 1 Imports and The Bombay Company, both based here, said December sales were up 18.1% and 6%, respectively. Pier 1's sales were $259.6 million, up from $291.9 million a year ago, and Bombay's sales topped $80 million.
Full-line retailer Havertys, based in Atlanta, reported December sales were up 4.2% to $65.1 million from $62.4 million in December of 2000.
Same-store sales were up 9.3% for Pier 1, up 1.3% for Havertys and flat at Bombay.
For the 48-week period ended Jan. 5, Bombay reported total revenues were up 5%, while same-store sales were down 1%. Havertys said sales for the 12 months were down 0.4% and same-store sales decreased 5.5%. Pier 1's year-to-date sales were up 10.7%, with same-store sales increasing 3.6%.
Restoration Hardware, which sells furniture, accessories and other home goods, said sales for the nine weeks ended Jan. 5 were $121.6 million, an 8.9% increase over the comparable year-earlier period. The Corte Madera, Calif.-based retailer said same-store sales for the same period were up 6.9%.
