Profile of respondents
More than 200 companies completed detailed questionnaires for Furniture/Today's 2001 Furniture Store Performance Report, published Sept. 17.
One-unit operations make up 69% of the responding companies. Respondents with two to five units represent 26%, and 5% have more than five units.
The four census regions were nearly evenly represented. Companies with stores in more than one region comprise 3% of the sample.
Of the more than 1,000 units operated by responding retailers, 87% are full-line furniture stores, 12% are specialty-by-style or product specialty stores, and 1% are manufacturer's gallery stores.
Style specialists include contemporary, traditional and country. Product specialists include bedding, juvenile, bedroom and dinettes.
The smallest of the retailers has annual sales of $30,000; the largest has more than $400 million. Median annual sales are $2.5 million.
Compiling the survey
The 2001 Furniture Store Performance Report was conducted by Senior Research Specialist Janice Chamberlain under the guidance of Kay Anderson, director of market research. Database Coordinator Cynthia Myers and Research Specialist Judi Fulbright assisted with the preparation of the report.
To safeguard individual results, data was collected and compiled by CPAs Karen L. Haver and Ken Smith for BDO Seidman LLP, the national accounting firm.
