Staples to close 30

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 10, 2002

Office superstore chain Staples plans to close 30 stores over the next two or three months in a variety of markets nationwide.

"We've taken a close look at the performance of all our stores to identify those that are underperforming and in locations where we can best serve the customer through nearby stores or direct delivery," said spokeswoman Deborah Hohler.

She said the retailer plans to open 120 stores worldwide this fiscal year, which began Feb. 3. That number includes 75 to 80 U.S. units. Staples has more than 1,100 U.S. stores and more than 1,400 stores worldwide.

Staples is the nation's second-largest office superstore chain, with an estimated $698 million in small office/home office furniture sales in 2000.
