Ron Lewis, bedding veteran

PHOENIX — Ron Lewis, a longtime bedding industry executive and former chairman of Top 100 store Bedroom Superstore, has died. He was 52.

Lewis had battled a variety of health problems since suffering a stroke in October 1995.

He perhaps is best remembered for his tenure at Sealy, where he held several executive posts in the 1980s when the company was known as Ohio Mattress Co. Working under legendary Ohio Mattress Chairman Ernest Wuliger, his tenure included stints as president of the company's flotation bedding division and its Stearns & Foster luxury bedding unit.

In the 1990s, Lewis served as president of watermattress producer American National, and made a brief return to Sealy. He was an executive at Springwall Mattress when he was stuck by the stroke on an airplane flight.

Lewis retired in 1998 because of health problems but came out of retirement in late 1999 to take a part-time post as Bedroom Superstore's chairman. He stepped down last year after the retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Survivors include his wife and three children. His son, Ben, is a buyer for five Bedroom Superstore units in California.
