Retail commitment counts in RTA
By Tom Edmonds -- Furniture Today, February 10, 2002
Know thyself, RTA retailer. Flat-pack furniture appears to be a success for those resellers, regardless of the distribution channel, that make a commitment to the category with an assortment to match their overall merchandise mix.
Two such retailers include Target, the discount chain, and Lowe's, the home-improvement and hardware warehouse operation.
These success stories are notable in today's uncertain environment, amid the uncertainty created by retail failures and restructurings, such as Kmart's recent Chapter 11 filing.
Both companies, Target and Lowes, are considered style leaders in their particular channels, and both have made an impressive commitment to the furniture category. Both seem to have a good-better-best approach, although neither attempts to be all things to all people.
In the articles that follow, the furniture assortments, pricing and display standards are at Target and Lowe's are examined.
