Big K posts $700 million for furniture as industry watches

Troy, Mich. — The displays can get a bit jumbled, and the product is occasionally a little worse for wear, but Kmart's estimated annual furniture sales of $700 million cannot be ignored.
And suppliers certainly don't want to wave bye-bye to this important outlet for flat-pack furniture.
Kmart's furniture presentation has been moving more to imported casual dining groups — tile tops or metal frames with wood tops — priced from $129 to $199 for a table and four. These are usually displayed on the floor, with storage shelves for boxes above.
Other imported furniture items recently seen in Kmart stores include a vanity with mirror and a bench. The entire box, available with oak or cherry veneers on the tops and the drawer fronts, retails for $129.99.
Another strong value was an imported set of sturdy nesting tables, made from rubber wood, priced at $69.99.
The panel-processed flat-pack furniture is usually up on gondolas, and most of the stores seem to pack it in pretty tight, with tagging often neglected. Not surprisingly, the selection skews strongly to the promotional with smaller pieces at lower prices. The high-end here was generally in the $179-$199 range for a workstation or an entertainment center.
