GREENSBORO, N.C. — Some 60 participants and furniture industry sponsors raised $25,000 for breast cancer research in the second annual Walk & Run for Hope here organized by Women in the Home Industries Today, or WithIt, in conjunction with the City of Hope.
Proceeds from the 5K run and 2K walk held at Grandover Resort last month will benefit cancer research and treatment at Duarte, Calif.-based City of Hope, one of the top U.S. cancer institutes. Breast cancer affects one in eight American women. Some 175,000 will be diagnosed this year, and 40,000 will die from the disease.
"Because WithIt is an organization for women, we feel City of Hope and its breast cancer research is an ideal cause for our support," said Tiffany Mullis of Vanguard Furniture, who co-chaired the event with Mary Leigh Wallace of McNeill Communications Group.
Corporate sponsors included Kincaid, Vanguard Furniture, Magnussen Presidential, American Drew, Cory Home Delivery and InFurniture.
Sharon White-Kuo, senior director of development for the City of Hope, noted that the home furnishings industry has supported the charity for 36 years and has raised more than $15 million.
"WithIt has become a central part of our annual outreach to the furniture community," she said.
Maxine Host-Madsen of Madsen Interior Design and Connie Post of Connie Post Designs were the top individual fundraisers.
