KEY WEST, Fla. — The 2001 Woodworking Machinery Industry Assn. Innovator, Educator and Exporter of the Year awards were presented at the trade group's annual awards dinner here.
American Woodmark of Winchester, Va., was named Innovatory of the Year. The company was honored for its efforts in automation and high technology. Founded in 1980, it is one of the five largest manufacturers of kitchen and bath cabinets in North America, and has recently completed a state-of-the-art panel manufacturing facility in Humboldt, Tenn.
The Educator of the Year Award went to Pittsburg State University's woodworking technology department. The state-supported school in southeast Kansas won the award in 1988, the first year it was presented, and was honored for the continuing breadth and depth of its program preparing young people for careers in the secondary wood products industry.
Fish Construction was named 2001 Exporter of the Year. The 20-year-old company provides commercial millwork and casework (furniture, counters and kiosks) for the aviation industry in North and South America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Its exports, which account for about 35% of revenue, have been growing from 25% to 50% a year.
