Hardwick launching importer, sets signature clock
By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, December 9, 2001
HIGH POINT — Former Pulaski executive Danny Hardwick is launching an import business, Carolina Furniture Collections, to be based here.
CFC will offer collectors cabinets, grandfather and accent clocks, and some bedroom suites and home entertainment centers. The company plans to show at the February Tupelo market and in High Point in April.
Product will be in the low-to-medium price points, Hardwick said, but with higher quality than typical. He declined to name the ownership group, but said the company has sufficient capital to get started even in a difficult economy.
Hardwick, CFC's president, worked in Pulaski's Ridgeway division for many years and most recently was sales manager for Shenandoah Clocks and Curios of Martinsville, Va.
He has recruited some former Athens sales representatives for Carolina Furniture Collections. "I call them the 'over-50 group' because they're all at least 50 years old," Hardwick said. He expects the company to be driven by input from reps who know what retailers want.
The company is set to introduce a signature grandfather clock with up-and-coming NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick.
Harvick won five races in the Busch Series this year and finished the junior circuit's season as the top driver, earning $923,000. Just a rookie on the NASCAR circuit, the 26-year-old won twice this year, finished the season ninth in the points standing and earned $3.7 million.
Hardwick said he already has retailers looking to buy the clock sight unseen.
He wants to keep offerings focused, with about 30 clocks and collectors cabinets, and eight to 10 bedroom suites and home entertainment units. He expects to sell $8 million in 2002.
While mainly an importer, Hardwick said the plant here will do some upfitting and finishing work.
