Klaussner closing Plant 8
By Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, November 18, 2001
ASHEBORO, N.C. — ASHEBORO, N.C. — Klaussner Furniture Inds. said last week it will close its Plant 8 upholstery operations in mid-January, transferring as many of the 133 employees to other plants as possible and laying off the rest.
Mark Walker, Klaussner's human relations director, said the actions were caused by "the economy being like it is" and store closings by major customers including Montgomery Ward, Heilig-Meyers and HomeLife. "That's a big hit," he said.
Walker said Klaussner has reduced its North Carolina workforce by 21% in the past year and has closed three plants, with some 2,200 employees remaining. Walker said that all of the company's factories were running at less than capacity.
Plant 8 makes living room upholstered products. Walker said that as many employees as possible will be hired for other jobs here and in two nearby counties.
Overall, he said, "We're optimistic. We had a good market in October and hope things will take off."
