Sauder's QBits offers customizable variety

ARCHBOLD, Ohio — Sauder Woodworking's October introduction of its QBits modular furniture system shows how ready-to-assemble furniture marries style and function.
The QBits system is made up of 14.5-inch interlocking cubes that can be combined and configured — with tops, legs, drawers, doors, hardware, double-size "Combi-Cubes" and other accessories — to create just about any type of furniture imaginable, other than upholstery, of course.
The seven components can work together in numerous ways, shifting roles as quickly as the need arises, serving as storage units, display walls, or pieces of furniture for work or play. Individual pieces, which are available in several finishes, retail from $8 to $40, but it takes about $200 to put together a desk with a hutch, for instance.
"These are not cheap, basic cubes," said Susan Dountas, vice president of merchandising. "We believe we've created something with style and an almost limitless potential number of uses."
RTA manufacturers have played around with cubes as furniture building blocks before, but Sauder's system is more comprehensive and is backed by a marketing program with a nationally recognized name.
Lynette Jennings, a designer and a television personality, is pitching for Sauder on this project, which already had strong retail placements when market started.
"There's a growing need for adaptable furnishings that allow people to make changes easily in their home decor," said Jennings, host of the Discovery Channel's highest rated TV show, Lynette Jennings Design.
"No one's life is static these days, and furniture is expected to be as multifaceted as the people who use it. A cube is inherently versatile, and a modular cube system allows people to create and recreate their home environments with ease and a sense of fun."
In stores, QBits will be shown in a variety of configurations or as a rack display with signage explaining the choices consumers have in creating custom furniture affordably.
