Bassett given Distinguished Service Award
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, November 18, 2001
NEW YORK — John D. Bassett III, president and chief executive officer of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture, was honored at the American Furniture Manufacturers Assn.'s annual meeting here with the association's 2001 Distinguished Service Award.
AFMA recognized Bassett as "a manufacturer's manufacturer" who exhibits "an intense and focused approach to business."
The Distinguished Service Award is presented annually in recognition of a member's contributions to the furniture industry.
Bassett was AFMA's president in 1997. During his tenure, the association established a blue-ribbon committee to explore ways to reverse the downward trend in the percentage of their disposable income that consumers spend on home furnishings. That committee's recommendations resulted in AFMA's current public relations program.
Bassett also has served two terms as chairman of the International Woodworking Fair.
In presenting the award, La-Z-Boy Chairman Pat Norton said, "He is an extremely devoted family man, a fierce leader of his company, and a competitor of the first order who has given tirelessly to our association, our industry and to the community where he lives and works."
