Parts stolen from market, mfr. tells High Point police

By Powell Slaughter -- Furniture Today, November 4, 2001

HIGH POINT — Statements, a case good manufacturer from California and first-time exhibitor at the High Point market last month, was the victim of larceny and vandalism during the show.

The company was displaying three new designs by Rick Lee in the Interhall area of the International Home Furnishings Center. A bedroom, the Infinity series, was damaged sometime Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning of market.

"Upon returning to my space on Wednesday morning, I found my bedroom set disassembled, broken and proprietary components missing," said Robert Luce, president of Statements, who said he was disappointed in security. "It wasn't something you couldn't go in and do in five minutes. Screws were out on the ground parts were broken and missing."

Tom Lindh, vice president of operations and administration at the IHFC, declined to comment.

Luce filed a report with High Point police, who took fingerprints.

"I am very glad we went to the effort to file a patent application on this design and utility of the design prior to market," he said. "I had a feeling this series would get a lot of attention, but never thought that something like this could happen. At least the patent will offer some protection."

Luce said Statements still wants to return to the High Point show despite the problems.
