Hitchcock closes store over lease terms

BURLINGTON , Mass — BURLINGTON , Mass. — Hitchcock Fine Home Furnishing will close its 12,000-square-foot store here after failing to reach new lease terms with its landlord.
The store, in a retail strip mall in greater Boston, is one of 10 New England stores operated by the Riverton, Conn.-based Hitchcock, a maker and retailer of high-end furniture.
"We have three stores within a half an hour (of the Burlington unit) so we have quite a bit of overlap," said Ron Coleman, president. He wouldn't release sales figures but estimated that one-third to one-half of the Burlington store's volume will wind up with the other stores.
"We felt that our other stores in the Boston market are able to serve the needs of our consumer from the Burlington area," he said.
Coleman said that while the company is going strong, "we felt that sales in our Burlington store could not offset the significant increase in rent by the landlord, so we elected not to renew."
Hitchcock moved into the leased location in 1999 with its acquisition of Bradford Furniture. The company owns most of its other properties.
Beginning Nov. 14 and running through Jan. 13, the Burlington store will hold a "$2 million storewide closing sale to liquidate inventory," the company said.
