Malaysia Int'l Furniture Fair to expand
By Brian Carroll -- Furniture Today, November 4, 2001
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Despite concerns about worldwide travel since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Malaysia International Furniture Fair is pushing ahead with expansion plans that will add 11% more space and increased representation by Asian manufacturers from outside Malaysia.
The show, set for March 5-9, follows the Philippine International Furniture Fair and overlaps by a day with the International Furniture Fair Singapore, which runs March 1-5.
New exhibitors from China, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan will make the 2002 Malaysia fair more international than past editions. They show's exhibitor roster has encompassed about 400 companies.
MIFF organizers are adding 11% more space at the Putra World Trade Center here, bringing the total to about 550,000 square feet spread over nine halls.
Furniture categories include bedroom, dining room, occasional, living room, outdoor/leisure, home office and accents. Known primarily for its offerings in rubberwood, which is indigenous to Malaysia, the show also is known for its rattan, metal and hardwoods.
The increase in international exhibitors has paralleled the growth in international buyers over the past six years. Last year's MIFF attracted 6,033 international buyers from 115 countries, compared with 2,520 from 50 countries in 1995. The exhibitor total hit 332 last year from less than half that in 1995.
