Libowsky heads organ donor drive
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, November 4, 2001
GULF BREEZE, Fla. — Marty Libowsky, a sales representative for Powell and Progressive, made a promise to a dying teenager and hopes the furniture industry will help him make it good.
He needs a million participants.
When Kelly Powell lay dying of cystic fibrosis, Libowsky was at his bedside. The 15-year-old Florida boy had been waiting four years for a lung transplant, but his turn never came. Before Kelly died this summer, Libowsky promised to sign up a million people as organ donors before Jan.1.
Libowsky has made the organ donor drive a project of the 100 Angels Foundation, an industry charitable organization he founded. Libowsky spearheads a number of projects benefiting children, including parties for High Point children before furniture markets.
"There are 75,000 people today waiting for their chance to live a normal life and 5,000 of them die waiting every year," Libowsky said. "Sign up as an organ donor on your drivers license. Don't take your organs to heaven. Heaven knows we need them on Earth."
He can be reached at (800) 634-0975, ext. 2221.
