Scott Thomas opens another plant in Egypt

CLEVELAND — Scott Thomas, a source for 18th century reproduction European and American case goods and occasional, has opened another plant in Egypt, consolidating previously scattered production there.
"President Bush has asked everyone to continue business in the wake of the attacks and we're doing that, in the Middle East no less," said Scott Hamed, vice president.
The new 75,000-square-foot facility, which includes a new finishing system, will allow Scott Thomas to better service its growing container business. The company has a warehouse in Cleveland.
"When you're working out of multiple locations you have transportation and product consistency issues," Hamed said. "We'd been thinking about a new market showroom, but we decided to put our efforts into the manufacturing end. One of our largest areas of growth is the container business, and when it's direct importing you need to make sure everything is right."
He noted that the Egyptian pound has been devalued relative to the U.S. dollar to stabilize the currency. "We expect our costs will be improved and that we'll be more competitive," he said.
In addition to its line for the U.S. market, Scott Thomas makes product for Bevan Funnell for distribution in Europe.
