Tom Seely cuts waste, wins honor

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Manufacturer Tom Seely Furniture has received a Business Environmental Leadership Award from a group of West Virginia business associations.
Gat Caperton, president and chief executive officer of Tom Seely Furniture, said the company received the award because of its record of reducing waste and air pollution over the last five years.
Caperton bought the solid-wood case goods and occasional manufacturer in 1996. Since then he has led an effort that's reduced air pollutant generation by 67%. In the past two years, liquid hazardous waste generation has been cut 72%.
"We decided we didn't want to become a major source of pollution," said Caperton. "We went through all our sources and got help with re-engineering from suppliers so that we could get more coating using less hazardous materials. We changed application methods and how we take care of our waste."
These efforts cost the company more than $100,000, he said.
Tom Seely was one of three companies honored for its efforts in pollution prevention.
