Global builds home office presence

HIGH POINT — Canadian office furniture giant Global Inds. is aiming to expand its presence with residential furniture retailers.
The company, which already has deep distribution among commercial furniture dealers, office superstores and other business-to-business channels, showed a variety chairs as well as several desking systems at the October market. Chairs range from $199 to $799 retail and desking systems from $1,999 to $2,499.
"We've picked some looks across our line that we think will have strong appeal with home office consumers," said Mark Steele, director of small office, home office sales. "In seating, we're featuring a lot of chenilles and textures, leathers, and wood bases and arms that have more of a residential feel."
Global is targeting Top 100 stores as well as regional chains.
"We see a real opportunity, particularly in office seating," Steele said. "Most residential retailers rely on imports, where they have to buy a container load at a time."
Global's 23 U.S. warehouses enable it to ship chairs, desks and cases within two to three weeks of orders, according to Steele. With nearly 7 million square feet of production space near Toronto, the company produces a diverse line of seating and furniture at a wide range of price points and styles.
"In these tough economic times, retailers are looking for ways to reduce inventory and cut expenses," said Steele. "Because of our ability to warehouse product, we can offer them very quick turns. And they can get chairs and desks from us in the same truck."
