Robert E. Brown, Brown Jordan co-founder
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, November 4, 2001
FRESNO, Calif. — Robert E. Brown, co-founder and former president of casual furniture producer Brown Jordan, has died here. He was 89.
Brown, regarded as a pioneer in the casual furniture industry, teamed with Hubert Jordan to start Brown Jordan in Pasadena, Calif., in 1945. They apparently hatched the idea for the company after talking with representatives of a hotel in Hawaii who wanted to buy furniture that could be used outdoors 12 months a year — a notion that was unheard of in those days.
Over the years, the company evolved into a producer of upper-end casual furniture for the residential and contract markets. Brown Jordan remains a leader in the category today.
Brown sold the company to Scott Paper Co. in the 1960s and retired soon after. Brown Jordan is now owned by WinsLoew Furniture, a Birmingham, Ala.-based manufacturer of casual furniture and case goods.
