Hammary Furniture adopts environmental program
Aims to cut waste, reduce use of resources

LENOIR, N.C. — Hammary Furniture has begun implementing the American Home Furnishings Alliance's Enhancing Furniture's Environmental Culture program, or EFEC.
The program is an environmental management system for the furniture industry launched by the AHFA in 1999.
The first Hammary facility to participate in the program is its Granite Falls, N.C., warehouse. The company said in a press release that it has begun tracking expenses for items such as solid waste disposal, electricity, natural gas, and propane.
Goals for the facility include 5% reductions in solid waste going to the county landfill and in usage of electricity, natural gas and propane.
The EFEC certification process requires a company to set an environmental policy with annual goals, including annual audits to verify that policies and procedures have been established and are followed.
"One component of Hammary's mission statement is to use our natural resources in an economical and equitable manner," said John Labarowski, president. "By establishing the procedures necessary for EFEC certification we are showing our commitment to improving the environment of our employees and our local community."
