New certification program debuts

LAS VEGAS — The Sustainable Furniture Council reported a good reception to new training programs piloted at this month's Las Vegas Market and said its seminars there were well attended.
The council, which promotes eco-friendly business practices among members, offered its first certification program, called Greenleaders, to business owners, managers, sales representatives and designers wanting to claim expertise on green residential issues, an SFC press release said.
The six-hour course covered environmental issues relating to home furnishings, consumer research, product sourcing, sales techniques, interior design and showroom operation.
The program also will be offered at the High Point Market and through webinars, the SFC said. Participants are tested after each module and a 90% passing grade is required to receive accreditation.
The group also said it signed a dozen new members at the market and reported that its slate of three free presentations each drew a capacity crowd of more than 50. The topics all revolved around ways for retailers to "green" their businesses.
"We have always gotten great support and response in Las Vegas, and this was our best ever, a significant accomplishment in the current environment," said Susan Inglis, executive director of the SFC.
