Don Byrne, F/T Washington correspondent

Byrne

WASHINGTON — Don Byrne, a veteran newsman and retired Furniture/Today Washington correspondent and columnist, has died at his Florida home. He was 73.

A Brooklyn native and veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, Byrne worked for a long list of publications and news organizations, including The Associated Press, The New York Journal American, Stars and Stripes, Armed Forces Radio and Aviation Daily.

He also was press assistant to the late Rep. John J. Rooney, D-N.Y., and in public relations for Pan American World Airways. In 1958, he went to Washington to handle press affairs for the old Flight Engineers Union.

Byrne joined Traffic World magazine in 1972 as congressional reporter and retired in 1990 as its editorial director. He subsequently covered Congress and federal regulatory agencies for Furniture/Today, retiring in 1999.

He was president of Washington's National Press Club in 1983.

Sidney Mazer, sales rep, former retailer

BIRMINGHAM , Ala. — Sidney Mazer, a sales representative and former furniture retailer here, has died. He was 76.

He was an owner of Mazer and Associates, representing home accent and furniture lines including Ambiance Imports and Andre Originals. His brother, Rhodes Mazer, and a son-in-law, David Lasley, continue in the business.

Until the 1960s, the brothers had operated a furniture store in Birmingham, Mazer's for Modern.

Sidney Mazer was known for his sense of humor and his generous heart. His rabbi recalled a family story about how as a retailer, he "had too much compassion" for factory reps who complained about bad business. "Sidney felt sorry for them, and as a result, placed orders with them whether he needed the goods or not."

When he caught employees stealing, he would lecture them about honesty and integrity. His brother suggested firing them, but he recalled Sidney saying, "I talked to them … they won't steal again."

Mazer also is survived by his wife, three daughters and three granddaughters. The family requests that memorials be made to a favorite charity
