In 2000, opened 41 new discount stores and 167 new Superstores, including the conversion of 104 existing discount stores into Supercenters. Total Wal-Mart sales were up 12.1% in 2000 to $121.9 billion. Outdoor furniture sales estimated at $270 million in 2000; offers two price levels, Garden Basics and Better Homes and Gardens. Adding to its already significant RTA offerings from O'Sullivan, Charleswood, Dorel and Bush, Wal-Mart continues to increase its furniture presence. It has leased space in about 30 of its Supercenters to American Mattress Centers, a new retailing entity formed to run mattress shops inside Wal-Mart stores. The new bedding displays are in the area in front of the checkouts, offering a variety of Sealy, Sealy Posturepedic and private-label bedding at promotional to middle price points.

In 2000, added four outdoor furniture collections to the MSE line, now in its third year. Outdoor furniture accounts for about 35% of total furniture sales. In July 2000, under the direction of new CEO Chuck Conaway, Kmart announced a restructuring program that entailed shuttering 69 stores. In the fall of 2000, introduced a new customer service rating system designed to improve consumers' shopping experience. In April 2001, relaunched its trademark blue-light special promotions.

Fiscal year ended Feb. 3. Operates stores in 19 states and the District of Columbia. Filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Aug. 20. Has announced the closing of 47 stores by the end of October: 15 in Ohio; 12 in Pennsylvania; six in Indiana; four in Virginia; three each in Illinois and New York; and one each in Maine, Maryland, North Carolina and West Virginia. Opened five units in March, including two in Illinois and one each in Indiana, New Jersey and Ohio. In addition to its RTA lines, Ames continues to strengthen its selection of unpainted furniture. Total 2000 sales, $3.95 billion, up 3% from 1999 total sales of $3.8 billion.

Fiscal year ended Feb. 3. Sales and store counts are for the Target Stores division of publicly traded Target Corp. Opened 24 new stores in 16 states, including eight new supercenters in March 2001. Plans to open 40 stores in 22 states in October 2001. Has agreed to buy the rights to 35 former Wards stores, including some in California, and will open 30 or more as Target stores after extensive remodeling. Added a Michael Graves set to its outdoor furniture offerings this year; outdoor furniture sales are estimated at $105 million. Announced in July its Renovations by Thomasville collection, including 30 SKUs for bedroom, home office, entertainment and storage, representing about 80% of the discounter's case goods. Total 2000 sales, $29.3 billion, up 12.3% from $26.1 billion in 1999.

Fiscal year ended Feb. 3. Sales and store counts are for ShopKo and Pamida. ShopKo stores are in 19 Midwest, Pacific Northwest and Western Mountain states. Pamida stores are in 16 Midwest, North Central and Rocky Mountain states. Hard lines at ShopKo stores, including furniture, accounted for 55% of total sales, down from 57% in 1999, while hard lines in Pamida units accounted for 70% of sales in 2000 and 1999. Total 2000 corporate sales increased 15.4% to $3.5 billion. Announced a "strategic reorganization" in January with the closing of 23 ShopKo stores and a related distribution center, completed by April 9. Opened a new full-service distribution facility in Omaha, Neb., in February featuring a state-of-the-art conveyor system, serving 35 ShopKo stores in six states.
