Mobile home owners put motion into recliner buying
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 16, 2001
Perhaps its only appropriate that one of the highest plan-to-buy indexes for those planning to buy reclining chairs shows up for those households that live in a mobile home — mobile home, mobile furniture.
Although only 8% of those planning to make a recliner purchase in 2001, this group has a PTB index of 129, much higher than those living in a house, an apartment or other residences.
As a group, households in mobile homes generally command lower incomes and plan to spend a median of $300 on a recliner. But a third of those households have an income above $30,000, and 85% own or are buying their homes.
Potential buyers in this group offer an opportunity for both manufacturers and retailers.
For retailers selling promotional reclining chairs, here is an opportunity to meet the needs of the mobile home household — space would be a consideration — and build a long-term relationship with that customer that could extend to casual dining, youth bedroom and other product.
For manufacturers, the opportunity may be in supplying recliners as part of the original furnishings for the new mobile homes that are sold ready-furnished.
