Swivel, rock or glide in comfort
Older parents, working older couples to spend $216M
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 16, 2001
Just as recliners are considered a creature comfort, upholstered chairs that swivel, rock or glide are designed with seating comfort at the top of the list.
These are chairs that find their way into many rooms of the house — a glider rocker for the nursery, certainly, but also a complementary piece to go in the den or the bedroom. And they inevitably become everyone's favorite place to sit.
Young parents (under age 45 with youngest child under age 6) and middle parents (under age 45 with youngest child age 6 or over) top the list of life stage groups that plan to make this purchase by year's end. These two groups account for 29% of those that plan to buy these motion chairs with plan-to-buy indexes of 128 and 138, respectively.
But the big spenders for these upholstered comforts are older parents and working older couples, who plan to spend an aggregate of more than $216 million dollars this year.
For both groups, more than three-fourths of the men are employed full time while roughly only half of the women are similarly employed. Approximately 90% live in a house, and nearly two-thirds have incomes of $50,000 or more.
The income levels are worth noting because in the Northeast and West, especially, the median price that households plan to spend this year jump dramatically at the $100,000 or higher income level.
Even so, plan-to-spend amounts are primarily in the promotional-price range, offering retailers the opportunity to do a little educating to step-up customers to a higher ticket.
