Goods Furniture named MAC's Retailer of Year
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 16, 2001
CHICAGO — Phil and Mary Good of Goods Furniture won the 2001 Retailer of the Year Award from the Manufacturers Agents Club of Chicago at the organization's annual dinner and awards ceremony.
Goods, located 2½ hours west of Chicago in Kewanee, Ill., makes furniture buying a fun experience, the club said in presenting the award. With nine historic gallery buildings spanning two city blocks and four levels, the retailer has annual sales of $25 million at its single location.
Named Buyer of the Year was Machiko Penny, who has been with 14-store Walter E. Smithe Furniture, Itasca, Ill., for 10 years, the past seven as buyer and general manager. She has been in the industry for 25 years, starting with Homer Bros. She has helped Walter E. Smithe achieve admirable growth, including a 37.3% sales increase in 2000 that put the company in 80th place among Furniture/Today's Top 100 U.S. Furniture Stores.
Specialty Store of the Year is Peppers Bedroom City, Melrose Park, Ill., which opened a flagship store and warehouse in May and is changing its name to Peppers Furniture City as it converts to full-line stores. Peppers was founded by Larry Bartell and Sam Spero as a waterbed retailer and later broadened into conventional bedding and case goods.
Honored with this year's Pillar of the Industry Award was Don Peddycord of Tilles Furniture, Munster, Ind. Peddycord started in the blinds business in 1947 and bought Tilles in 1973. The retailer's staff has grown to 35 employees and it has earned a reputation for quality and fairness, the club said.
The MAC's newest award is Showroom of the Year, given to the Betty M Collection design showroom in Chicago's Merchandise Mart. Betty Menna's 20,000-square-foot space shows high-end furniture, art, accessories and fabrics.
