ARNHEM, The Netherlands — Finishings supplier Akzo Nobel has opened its second plant in China, a 330,000-square-foot wood coatings facility in the furniture manufacturing center of Dongguan City.
Akzo started up another wood coatings plant in Suzhou in September.
The moves are part of Akzo's strategic effort to increase market share in the Asia Pacific region and a recognition of China as the area's key market, said Rudy van der Meer, Akzo Nobel board member in charge of wood coatings.
"We have a long-term commitment to the Chinese furniture producing industry, which is one of the largest in the world," he said, adding the new plant will "further develop (our) already strong position" in China.
Akzo Nobel now has 15 operations in China representing the company's three business areas of pharmaceuticals, coatings and chemicals. With the exception of one 50-50 joint venture, all the operations are majority- or wholly owned by Akzo Nobel, including the Dongguan City plant, which is 100% Akzo-owned.
The new plant starts production this month.
