Thomasville to import Vignettes brand

By Tom Edmonds -- Furniture Today, November 11, 2001

Thomasville Furniture has created a new import division that will be managed through its Virginia operations.

The Vignettes brand will be a step-up from the company's Founders Furniture and the Creative Ideas brands now based in Virginia and led by Phil Miller, vice president and general manager.

Vignettes will be marketed as a division of Thomasville Furniture, but won't be sold in Thomasville Home Furnishings stores or at in-store Thomasville galleries. Four-piece bedrooms are expected to retail from $999 to $1,999.

"The Vignettes product that will be coming in from Asia will be designed and engineered to go to either the mass merchant channel or the traditional furniture store as a distinct brand, not as a Thomasville Furniture product," Miller said.

The first Vignettes collections will be made from solids and veneers and will be sourced from Asia. At first, the brand will focus on assembled furniture, but Miller expects to explore ready-to-assemble.

"The product could fit any category, and we are not limiting that to assembled furniture," he said. "We're looking right now at some of our manufacturing alliances to see what they may be able to do for us with ready-to-assemble furniture."

The first Vignettes collection, a pine girls bedroom collection called Ribbons & Bows, was shown at the October market. The 25-piece group ships fully assembled.

Vignettes is a step up from Founders, which sells assembled four-piece bedrooms for about $600, or Creative Ideas, which makes flat-pack furniture.

"The platform that we're shooting for in youth is a natural extension from the papers and prints we have now up to the solids and veneers," Miller said. "In adult bedroom, I believe there is an opportunity from $999 to $1,999 with quality goods under a quality name."

New Classics is one of the first collections from Vignettes, a new import division of Thomasville Furniture.
