Connecting the world

Bay Minette, Ala. — With 52 people employed by Standard Furniture in mainland China, transcontinental communication is essential to the vitality of its business. Standard is using Internet-enabled communications to integrate its global sourcing network with headquarters here and with warehousing and shipping facilities in California.
"With a server in China, they can input data that gets uploaded into our AS 400" in Bay Minette, said Don Mecke, vice president of sales and marketing. In fact, Mecke said, the data connection between southern China and southern Alabama is not unlike that connecting Bay Minette with nearby Frisco City, which also is home to a Standard production facility.
With political turbulence in places such as Indonesia and parts of the Philippines, electronic communication has become ever more important in managing a global sourcing enterprise, Mecke said. Standard Furniture, like most manufacturers, has prohibited by its employees travel into Indonesia, at least for the time being.
"We're somewhat handicapped by not sending people there," he said. "We will have to do more electronically, and we will rely more on our associates there."
