BenchCraft 'Murphy Home' collection gets good reception

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, October 28, 2001

Upholstery major BenchCraft got a strong response here to its new Beverly Murphy Home collection, which uses pre-coordinated fabrics in colors inspired by nature to make home decorating easy for consumers.

Grouped into four color palettes representing the four seasons, the upholstery is offered with coordinated accent rugs, pillows, top of bed and throws, all designed by Murphy, and all of which can be ordered from BenchCraft sales representatives.

Sofas retail from $699 to $999. A leather sofa retails for $1,999.

"It's simple, affordable and the consumer does have options," said Dwight Hardison, vice president of marketing and merchandising. "It was very, very well received. Dealers bought this as a program that is consumer-driven and consumer-friendly. It is also fun."

The four groups are:

  • January Haven, with softened contemporary designs in a neutral color palette accented with grasshoppers and faux ostrich.

  • June Afternoon, with French Country motifs in blue, yellow, apple green and red. Style highlights include daffodils, puppies, ladybugs and plaids.

  • August Sunlight, with soft pastels that reflect summer sunlight. Colors include peach, eggshell and lavender. Design motifs include Murphy's signature dragonfly.

  • November Evening, which makes a romance story in jewel tones of rust, gold and black. Design motifs include pineapples and bumblebees.

Each group includes sofas, loveseats, slipper chairs, wood carved accent chairs and an upholstered bed. And each group is color- and number-coded — the consumer simply matches the numbers to determine which products will work together.

Murphy is an interior designer who spent two decades in contract design. The patterns, fabrics and colors of her products are designed exclusively for her Beverly Murphy Home collection. Her company's tag line, "Real Choices," emphasizes the breadth of her offerings.
