Entertainment: It's a matter of adjustment

By Tom Edmonds -- Furniture Today, October 28, 2001

HIGH POINT — Entertainment furniture is an increasingly active opportunity for flat-pack furniture makers, who were offering more sizes, shapes, colors and prices than ever at market here.

New designs reflected the dimensions and colors of flat-screen and high-definition TVs.

"We're developing products to go with the high-ticket, high-design TVs of today," said John Ledek, vice president of marketing at Bush. "Retailers and consumers are looking for pieces with more style and quality to match their electronics."

To fit new high-definition TVs and the increased use of external speakers, Bush and several other producers have television stands that are so wide they have the silhouette of a giant cedar chest. Of course, these TV stands are loaded with storage compartments and shelves, too.

At the same time, traditional shapes and sizes in electronics are still on the market, forcing furniture makers to address both the old and the new.

Flexible function and changes in color palettes were common in RTA showrooms here. Nearly every vendor had entertainment centers that can adjust to different-sized sets, and many collections are now in colors that go with the new silver and platinum cases on televisions.

Besides adjusting its color palette, Gusdorf has also developed shapes to match the contours of this new generation of televisions.

"The changes taking place on the electronics side are exciting, and it's our responsibility to develop furniture to match that excitement," said Gusdorf President Shawn Lieb.

Club 8's new entertainment center shows how RTA producers are using adjustable designs to accommodate a wide range of television sizes.
