Moh sets up $3M scholarship fund
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, October 28, 2001
HIGH POINT — Larry Moh, who led Universal to prominence as a marketer of Asian-made case goods, is establishing a $3 million fund to help students pursuing furniture industry careers.
Moh, now head of importer Fine Furniture Design & Marketing, announced creation of the Celia Moh Scholarship Foundation, in honor of his wife of 42 years, at a dinner during the October market.
He also said he'll give $500,000 to complete funding of a new International School of Home Furnishings building at High Point University.
In 1999, Moh established a $600,000 scholarship for furniture studies at High Point University, and has contributed to schools in China and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
The new scholarships, open to students in the United States or elsewhere who are interested in the furniture business, may be used at any U.S. university.
Ted Weschler of Peninsula Capital in Virginia will manage the fund. Starting next year, 5% of the outstanding principal, $150,000 in the first year, will be available for awarding scholarships at the discretion of a selection committee.
The committee includes Don Mitchell, president of the case goods division of La-Z-Boy; Joe Carroll, publisher of Furniture/Today; Richard Bennington, director of home furnishings marketing programs at High Point University; Geoff Beaston, president of Fine Furniture Design & Marketing; and industry analyst Jerry Epperson.
"Since 1959 I've been involved in furniture and related industries, which have been very good to me and my family," Moh said. "Now it's time to give something back."
