Fund raiser nets $1.3M

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, October 28, 2001

A fund-raising market dinner for the City of Hope netted over $1.3 million for the not-for-profit California medical and research facility.

The total was the largest ever raised at the home furnishings industry's annual City of Hope gala.

Steve Kincaid, president of manufacturer Kincaid Furniture, and retailer Bill Kimbrell, president of Atlanta-based Rhodes Furniture, were honored at the black-tie dinner. Nearly 800 people crowded into the Sheraton Four Seasons hotel for the event.

Based in the Los Angeles suburb of Duarte, Calif., the City of Hope provides medical research and a full range of inpatient and outpatient care for people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. It is one of only 40 comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute and also is one of the nation's leading facilities for bone marrow transplants.

Founded in 1913, it now has more than 2,500 employees, including 300 physicians and scientists.

In its last fiscal year, about 23% of the City of Hope's $328 million in revenues came from philanthropic giving. Other sources of funding include research grants and royalties.
