Board members pleasantly surprised with fall market
By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, October 28, 2001
HIGH POINT — Members of the board that runs the High Point market were pleasantly surprised with the October show and expect bigger opportunities in six months.
Meeting as the market was winding down, the High Point International Home Furnishings Market Authority said that all of the Top 100 furniture stores attended and all but a few of the second 100.
Bruce Miller, president and chief executive officer of the International Home Furnishings Center, said he guessed that attendance was down about 20% to 25% with fewer small retailers and designers attending. Randy Short, president of Stanford Furniture, said he still did well with smaller buyers.
"Those who were here were very determined to improve their selection … and left here punch-drunk," Short said. "The retailers who came were the ones who were serious about business."
Since some apparently skipped this market due to traveling fears, Miller predicted the April market would have a strong turnout. Tom Mitchell of Merchandise Mart Properties Inc. echoed that sentiment.
In another action, the authority named Tatum Toomey & Wicker as its public relations firm on an as-needed basis.
