Marketgoers suggest shuttles start earlier

HIGH POINT — HIGH POINT — What do buyers and exhibitors want in a High Point market?
Members of the Market Authority Advisory Committee made a list and the group's chairman, Steve DeHaan, executive vice president of the National Home Furnishing Assn., presented it at the authority's meeting last week.
-
No one can stop early arrivals, DeHaan said, so the authority should have shuttles available earlier than the market's first Thursday.
-
Because retailers also are leaving market sooner, the Advisory Committee recommended closing on Tuesday rather than Thursday.
-
Prices and availability of rental cars are problems. Another transportation complaint was the shortage of taxicabs serving the downtown area.
-
Some marketgoers have complained that shuttles from outlying parking areas are not on time. The committee suggested the wait between shuttles be no more than five minutes. Judy Mendenhall, Market Authority president, also said many people have told her they want the shuttle service to run later in the evenings.
-
She said she has met with transportation companies to seek proposals on improved service.
-
DeHaan said he was appreciative that many hotels agreed to reduce the reservation commitment from five nights to four.
He also said that lodging prices were somewhat lower this market.
