IHFMA backs application for transit funds

HIGH POINT — The International Home Furnishings Market Authority has given its support to an application seeking $3.5 million in federal funds for transportation projects.
Judy Mendenhall, president of the authority, said the city of High Point might use some of the money to provide two park-and-ride lots, which would decrease traffic during furniture markets and thus lessen air pollution.
One of the lots might go in the vicinity of the U.S. 311 overpass and Kivett Drive, with space for about 600 cars, she said. The location would be convenient for marketgoers and encourage greater use of shuttle transportation.
The Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation, which represents the High Point area, is seeking the funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Since the High Point-Greensboro-Winston-Salem area is ranked as the 25th-worst urban area in the nation for air quality, Mendenhall believes there's a good chance of getting the funds.
PART will be expected to match part of any federal grant, and Mendenhall said the Market Authority likely would be asked to contribute to that match. A tax on car rentals has been mentioned as one way of providing matching funds.
