Southern changes to SouthPort

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, October 28, 2001

Bedroom, dining and occasional source Southern Furniture Reproductions is changing its name to SouthPort Furniture and also is switching from domestic production to sourcing overseas.

"We believe this new name complements our present product mix, and marks the starting point for the direction of our new product introductions," said company President McQueen Campbell.

SouthPort will convert its 100,000-square-foot plant here to a distribution center, enabling the company to offer product out of a stateside warehouse in addition to container-direct shipments and pricing.

In addition to getting more competitive pricing, the switch to imports opens doors for manufacturing capacity that will give designers more leeway in developing new product, Campbell said.

"We're initially sourcing product out of Mexico, but we're working now on product out of Asia," he said.
