Frequent introductions may help rug business this year

HIGH POINT — Rug vendors frequently complain that they must bring out new lines four times a year to hit the various channels of distribution. But this fall, that costly practice may be operating in their favor.
Many will show fine-tuned versions of the products that were introduced at Atlanta's Area Rug Market in July. In addition, new collections that were canceled for this fall won't have to sit on the back burner for another six months. Rug suppliers get another crack at buyers at the big Atlanta rug show in January.
Area rug producers have expressed ambivalence about High Point in the eight years since they arrived here in force.
On the one hand, the furniture and department store distribution channel is especially prime for rug vendors oriented to fashion and quality. On the other hand, it has been difficult to fill rug showrooms with buyers whose first order of business is upholstery and case goods.
