Youth bedroom goes natural
By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, October 14, 2001
HIGH POINT — Natural wood finishes abound in youth furniture this market.
Youth manufacturers such as Stanley and Huppé are making use of natural woods with clear finishes to show the beauty of the wood.
Stanley introduces the UR Gr8 (you are great) collection, in birch and maple with a light, natural amber finish or in poplar with a white finish. Between the two finishes, the total SKU count is about 35.
Among the distinctive touches is a computer desk and hutch with a metal screen beside a mirror. The perforated metal accepts either magnets or push pins to hold up photos and other possessions. The collection has wood and aluminum hardware. The pieces make use of plastic storage containers colored to match Apple's iMac computers. The containers fit into spaces in the junior armoire, captain's bed, bookcase headboard and a mobile nightstand.
Huppé's Malibu collection has 10 contemporary pieces in birch. Available in 24 finishes, the collection hits medium price points.
P.J. Kids introduces its Rooms To Dream collection, made of ash and ash veneers. The company has made its name in the marketplace on colorful licensed groups featuring Barbie, Sesame Street, Winnie the Pooh and Blue's Clues. However the success of its Natural Wood line in April spurred the development of the new group.
At the San Francisco market, P.J. Kids gave retailers a hint of what was to come by explaining the interchangeable drawer fronts. The drawer panel can be removed and flipped to show either a wood side or an upholstered side. The fabric coordinates with bedding from companies like California Kids, Dan River and Fireside Comforts.
"Our relationship with the bedding companies is what will help to make this customized program such a success," said President Stewart Paul.
The line features several bed options; the twin beds retail for $499, and the bunk beds for $999.
P.J. Kids is also banking on renewed interest in its Harry Potter collection.
Light and lively
Other youth introductions this market include Aspirations, a 22-piece collection in solid hardwood from Thunderbird. The group has multiple bed setups with trundle bed/storage options and comes in four finishes and three knob options.
Standard's Rugby line is part of the Kid's City division. It features light maple and blue simulated wood grain laminates in a sporty style. The signature piece is a new mid-loft cabin bed, incorporating more pieces into the same square footage.
AP Inds./Generations offers new beds including a twin bed retailing between $300 and $350, a twin-over-twin bunk bed for $599 and an oak bunk bed for $699. Finish options include khaki, off-white, flat white and a weathered finish.
California's Good Companies has Primrose Lane, 17 pieces in an engraved Botany Oak finish. The case pieces have bent drawer construction. The five-piece bedroom set retails for about $420.
